HISTORICAL EVENTS SURROUNDING CALIPHATE

May 2012

Some very shocking incidents took place immediately before, and after, the death of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family.

In short, this is what we are led to believe:

Holy Prophet performs last Hajj in year 632 C.E. On returning to Medina, Prophet suddenly falls ill and dies. Abu Bakr is unanimously chosen as the Calipha.

That simply does not make sense. It raises a lot of questions. We need to find out what really happened? In order to understand we need to read authentic Seerah (Life of the Prophet). We discover that three main events:

1. Pen and Paper incident. Some Muslims refuse to allow Prophet to write his will.

2. Abu Bakr leaves body of the Prophet to takes oath of allegiance in Saqifa.

3. Fatima not allowed Prophet’s inheritance. Abu Bakr rejects Fatima’s demands.

In books of history, we read that just two months before his death, Holy Prophet Muhammad performed his farewell pilgrimage. After his last Hajj, on way back to Medina, the Holy Prophet stopped all caravans at Ghadir al Khumm. Here the Holy Prophet delivered to Muslims a special message from Allah. In his long sermon, Prophet appointed Ali as his successor. Prophet said: “If I am your Mola then Ali is your Mola.”
After Ghadir sermon, the Holy Prophet Muhammad returned to Medina, and suddenly fell ill. On Thursday, just four days before his death, Prophet wished to write for Muslims something important. But some Muslims denied the Prophet his last will. They refused to bring pen and paper. Prophet died on Monday without writing that text. Some of his Sahabas went to Saqifa hall where they chose Abu Bakr as the next leader. Prophet only surviving daughter Fatima, went to Abu Bakr and demanded from him to hand over inheritances of her holy father. Abu Bakr denied Fatima the land of Fadak and other properties. Fatima became angry with Abu Bakr. She dies upset.

These were essential historical events that are written in books by Sunni scholars. Shia scholars give further information regarding these incidents. We need all the jig-saw pieces to complete the picture surrounding the issue of Caliphate.

Some sayings of the Holy Prophet regarding his daughter and her husband:

“Fatima is the Leader of Women of Paradise.”

“Fatima is part of me. Whoever hurts her hurts me.”

“O Ali, only a believer will love you and only a hypocrite will dislike you.”

“O Ali, you are to me as Haroon was to Musa.”

“I leave behind for you two great things, Quran and my family.”
